World Osteoporosis Day 2020 World Osteoporosis Day takes place on October 20 each year. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disorder where your bones lose mineral density, become brittle and increases the risk of fractures. Osteoporotic fractures occur in situations where healthy people would not normally break a bone. This occurs because natural bone loss exceeds production. Common fracture sites include the spine, hip and wrist. Risk factors increase as we age. Fractures affect one in three women and one in five men over the age 50. Excessive alcohol and smoking are associated with osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise and calcium in your diet are required to maintain bone health and help reduce bone loss. Milk and dairy products are rich in calcium. Leafy greens, legumes and beans are also a source of calcium. To absorb calcium from our diets we need vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced by the body

An estimated one billion people suffer with spinal pain worldwide and it is the world’s biggest single cause of disability.  World Spine Day highlights the importance of good posture, responsible lifting and promotes physical activity. Most back pain is primarily caused by our repeated movements: the way we move and sit. With repeated unhealthy movement we accumulate stress in specific spinal joints and develop hinge points, particularly the lower spine. To get rid of that hinge point we need to pay attention to the way we do things. It takes months for the body to heal; replace these weak stressed tissues with new tougher tissues. Having said that, you will notice the improvements in pain with proper movement much sooner! The hip-hinge To pick things up, avoid buckling through the lower back. Bend through knees and hinge at the hips to keep the hollow at the base of the spi
