World Osteoporosis Day 2020
Osteoporosis is a disorder where your bones lose mineral density, become brittle and increases the risk of fractures. Osteoporotic fractures occur in situations where healthy people would not normally break a bone. This occurs because natural bone loss exceeds production. Common fracture sites include the spine, hip and wrist. Risk factors increase as we age. Fractures affect one in three women and one in five men over the age 50. Excessive alcohol and smoking are associated with osteoporosis.
Weight-bearing exercise and calcium in your diet are required to maintain bone health and help reduce bone loss. Milk and dairy products are rich in calcium. Leafy greens, legumes and beans are also a source of calcium.
To absorb calcium from our diets we need vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced by the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. A lack of vitamin D is common in the UK in winter. A 10-microgram supplement of vitamin D is recommended by Public Health England in the autumn and winter months.
